Since we spent the first week of our Bahamas vacation at sea on the Aqua Cat...we were cut off from the world wide web...thus...no real time blogging for this adventure. We did capture video and tons of photos from our first live-aboard dive vacation. Those will be shared here for your viewing pleasure :-).
The trip was an amazing experience. Easy direct flights from Calgary to Nassau and pre-arranged transport for our group and all our luggage to the harbour where the Aqua Cat was waiting for us. We were escorted on board and they transferred all of our bags to the dive deck while we were handed cups of rum punch. We got our gear all set up for the week and then got our stuff settled in our cabins. The cabins were great...spacious with big windows and plenty of room for clothes and all the other crap we tend to bring along and private bathrooms too..well...with the exception of Paul and James who got the short straw and the room with bunk beds and only a skylight...luckily they aren't claustrophobic! LOL We had dinner on board and got all checked in then it was off to bed. We headed out to sea in the wee hours of the morning to start our diving adventure.
We were offered up to 5 dives per day with the option for other activities too if we wanted to skip a dive. There were excursions on the Sea Dog (little boat) to do things like visit the iguanas on Alan's Cay, do some snorkel boarding, spend time lounging on white sand beaches on nearby uninhabited islands. There was always something to do...even movie nights with popcorn!
The crew was amazing and really worked to make sure everyone was having a great time. The diving ranged from good to great. The water could have been much warmer for my comfort...so my dive times were dictated by my degrees of hypothermia instead of amount of remaining air. Luckily there was plenty of warm water on the boat and the crew was always there as soon as I was up the ladder to hose me down with a hot shower :-). There were plenty of fish and critters to see and some of the sites had stunningly beautiful corals. One of our main reasons for choosing the Bahamas was to see sharks...and boy did we...we did one shark feed dive and it was amazing how many sharks showed up. We were down with them for almost an hour and took lots of photos and video...I was pretty much a popsicle by the time we came up but it was worth every minute.

The week seemed to fly by and soon it was time to head back to shore. We were sad to say goodbye to the crew but were looking forward to a week in a condo on the beach...and our condo didn't disappoint. Our unit is great and is close to everything we need. Our first day we had a bit of a wait for our units to be cleaned so we headed in to check out the straw market and had some yummy daiquiris for breakfast...we're on vacation right? Today we hired a van today and took a bit of a tour around the island to see what else is out there. We checked out The Caves at Cave Point...and got to see the bats that live in there. We also checked out Fort Charlotte and the local distillery before heading to the 'world famous' fish fry for dinner. Of course the fish was amazing...and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to see a grouper when diving again without drooling :-). Unfortunately the pirate museum was closed today and we didn't have time for the zoo but there is always tomorrow. The rest of our group is heading home on Tuesday and Wednesday so we'll do a few more group things...then we are on our own for a couple days before we have to head back
