We were up VERY early this morning to catch our flight from Houston to Cozumel. Wade was like a kid on Christmas morning and couldn't sleep past 4am so we had an early start LOL. The flight into Mexico was uneventful except for them running out of Mexican customs forms on the plane so we had to fill out ones that only had instructions in Spanish! It was kinda like being in school with the teacher (flight attendant) on the PA system translating each box on the form so we could fill in the right information. Apparently it was ok though as we didn't have any trouble getting into the country after waiting in the long slow line and watching the sniffer dogs check out our baggage out the window before it was put on the belt to come in to the terminal. Everyone got all of their bags and we boarded a van to Scuba Club.
The resort is great. Not too big but totally built for divers. We had a bit of a wait before our rooms were ready so we headed to dive shop to check in, get our weights and see if we could request our own boat for the week so we don't have to dive with 'strangers'. Henry at the dive shop was AWESOME...he said he'd try to get us our own boat and Dive Master and then gave us the rules and tour of the place. After we were all set up at the shop we got our lockers picked out and then headed to the restaurant for lunch. It was burgers all around for us today and then we had to pick our entree for dinner. Luckily after lunch our room was ready so we headed up to get settled in. The rooms are large and have lots of space for gear and are totally tiled so very 'wet diver' friendly. We think they gave us the Arctic themed room as we are Canadian and they wanted us to feel like we were home! Our room looks like an igloo inside and everything is white and blue. They even made a towel sculpture of what looks like an Eskimo and left it on the bed! Little did they know we aren't missing the cold at all!
After getting all of our stuff put away it was time to head down to the dock and meet the crew for our check out shore dive. All was well and the dive was great except for my dive computer! For some reason it would only tell me how much air I had not anything else...like depth...and a million other important things it tells me. Luckily I dive with a backup computer but it doesn't read my air...so between the two of them I had enough info to continue the dive but I stuck pretty close to Wade just in case I needed a rescue :-). All went well and we saw lots of cool critters. No photos though as the camera always stays on shore until I'm sure my gear is all in order. I was glad of this practice today! The environment under water by the resort is a bit different from what we are used to. Not much coral and lots of 'rubble' (think concrete blocks and slabs). Not really colourful but home to lots of interesting creatures. We saw eels, scorpion fish, little rays, flounders, spider crabs, puffers and lots of anemones. Will definitely do this dive again with the camera! The current was running but not crazy fast. It was work to swim against it and you didn't get far that way so we circled around near the resort instead of doing a normal out and back.
After the dive we played with my computer a bit to see if we could figure out what was up with it and think we may have it fixed now but luckily Dave has more backups than I do had has a spare computer exactly the same as mine that he has graciously offered me for the week. Gotta love dive buddies like that!
Next it was off to dinner...a delicious meal and conversation about the day and lots of laughs. After dinner Dave ordered a Spanish coffee (I know, I know it is 30 degrees here and he wants coffee???)...it didn't take much prompting for Wade and Micheline to order them too...and we got quite a show as they were made...think a pyrotechnics show with flaming liquor and exploding cinnamon that ends up in a glass with a scoop of ice cream and a splash of coffee...apparently it was good :-). I may be convinced to try it by next weekend ;-)
Now it is time to get the camera gear ready and off to bed...the boat leaves at 8:15 tomorrow morning!
